Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does FAQ mean?
Q: What is a FAQ?

A: FAQ stands for 'Frequently Asked Questions'. Here we attempt to answer the more frequently asked questions so that the answer are available immediately to anyone visiting our web site. Please read the whole FAQ before e-mailing us to ask questions, your query may have already been answered!
Q: I've got the map on the screen, now what?
A: You have two choices, you can either move your mouse over the map and click when you are over the county that you wish to explore, or you can go straight to the county by clicking on it from the lists either side of the main map.

Q: How do I find more information about things?
A: All the text on the site that is coloured pale blue links to further information. Simply move your mouse pointer and the text will become underlined, now click on the keyword to look at that information. There are a few blue links on this page, try it!

Q: I know which museum I want to see but I don't know which county it is in or
Q: I want to see a particular type of aircraft, where can I find them?

A: Easy. You can search our site using the search box in the header at the top of the page. Simply click on your match from the list (if you do find a match!) and you will be taken straight there.

Q: What are the numbers next to the county list?
A: The numbers relate to the number of museums in our database that are located in that county.
Q: Can you guarantee that the exhibits listed will be avilable to view?
A: Unfortunately, no. The data that we have for the museums listed is, to the best of our knowledge, correct at the date noted, however exhibits do occasionally move, or are involved in airshows (see question 2, below). If you are interested in visiting a specific aircraft, we recommend that you contact the organisation/site concerned before you travel to ensure that the exhibit will be available for you to view.

Q: What about airworthy exhibits?
A: It is possible that airworthy exhibits may not be at their stated 'home' location (we have been caught out by this more than once!) They may be involved in one of the many airshows that occur around the UK during the airshow season, or simply being flown by their owner/operator. If you are interested in visiting a specific aircraft, we recommend that you contact the organisation/site concerned before you travel to ensure that the exhibit will be available for you to view. Of course if the aircraft is flying at an airshow, you may be able to view it and many other aircraft where they belong - in the air!

Q: What about exhibits listed as 'in storage', 'under restoration' and so on?
A: Sorry, but exhibits listed as in storage or under restoration may not be available to view by the public. The organisation concerned should be able to advise you whether the exhibit is on public display.

Q: I have some updated information regarding one or more exhibits you have listed, what should I do?
Q: Some of the data you have appears to be wrong, what should I do?

A: Please let us know if you have any updates to the information we have or if you find any errors either in the data displayed by using the contact us page.

Q: I've seen an aircraft that I didnt recognise - I did note the registration number however, how can I find out what it was?
A: Try our search facility, if you can't find it try e-mailing us we may know.

A: Please let us know if you find any errors either in the web page coding, or in the data displayed by using the contact us page

Q: What database and database querying system do you use?
A: We use MySQL for the database, and a custom PHP application called PALMS (written by Andrew Davidson) to both retrieve the data from the database and build the web pages that are displayed on your PC. The system runs on a computer running the SuSE Linux operating system. For more information on what was used to build this web site see the About the site section

Q: I have a question that you have not answered here, what should I do?
